The Coffee Book Tag

I saw this tag this afternoon over at Leaning Tower of Tomes, and the questions caught my eye (not because I’m a coffee drinker or anything; in fact, I hate coffee, and all hot drinks! Including tea… I’m an abominable Brit!). Plus, I just love doing tags, and I have time to kill while my e-reader charges (it had to die just as I was getting into a book, didn’t it?).

A SERIES WHICH IS TOUGH TO GET INTO BUT HAS HARDCORE FANS

It’s probably the most popular answer here, but ‘A Song of Ice and Fire’ by George R.R. Martin. I really struggled to get into it – although I am enjoying it now – and the fans of this one are incredibly hardcore (a few of my friends are completely and utterly obsessed; I wouldn’t want to cross them with a bad word about it!). I don’t think I could ever be a massive fan of the series because of the sexism (which I do have niggling issues with).

A BOOK WHICH GETS MORE POPULAR OVER THE FESTIVE SEASON

Obviously, ‘Let it Snow’ by John Green, Maureen Johnson and Lauren Myracle gets more popular at Christmas – it is a festive book, after all. I haven’t read it, and need to, as it is the only John Green I haven’t, but I can hardly pick it up in June… Side note; peppermint mocha is a thing?! Sounds disgusting…

The entire ‘Cherub’ series by Robert Muchamore was my favourite series when I was 9 or 10… I think it’d probably be classed in the ‘teen’ section, but I read it when I was younger, so I’m putting it as ‘children’s’. I surprised you by not choosing ‘Harry Potter’, didn’t I? Well, I always choose it, and I wanted to vary my answers.

I never hear anyone talk about this book! ‘The Way We Fall’ by Megan Crewe had me gripped right from the beginning. I really want to find another person who liked this one!

In a similar strand to Starbucks, it’s everywhere, everyone loves it and I really, really don’t… ‘Divergent’ by Veronica Roth. As we all know, this series is absolutely everywhere, and I can’t for the life of me fathom why it ever got so big.

GIVE A BOOK BY AN INDIE AUTHOR A SHOUT OUT

UPDATE I didn’t answer this question when I originally posted this, as I was in the process of reading this book – I was about 35% through – and didn’t want to tell you how brilliant it was, only to be disappointed by the end. That is why I am here, updating this post at 1:25 in the morning, having just finished ‘Blue Karma’ by J.K. Ullrich; I have finished, and it continued just as well as it started, so I can honestly say that I recommend you all go and read this one. I’ll have a review of it up soon; for now, I’ll just say that I loved it.

A BOOK YOU EXPECTED MORE FROM

I was so, so excited to read ‘Zodiac’ by Romina Russell. The world sounded original and the plot exciting, and that was true, however the massive love triangle and insufferable characters really made this book a struggle to read. It was so disappointing, given that the universe behind it all was amazing.

The Perfect Blend

A BOOK THAT WAS BITTER AND SWEET, BUT ULTIMATELY SATISFYING

‘The Mortal Instruments’ by Cassandra Clare took a bit of a hit in books four and five in my opinion, so I was very nervy for how it would close. Ultimately, though, ‘City of Heavenly Fire’ was the best way to end the series. If you’ve read the end, I’m sure you know exactly what I mean by both bitter and sweet…

Green Tea

A BOOK WHICH IS QUIETLY BEAUTIFUL

If you hear the name Laini Taylor, the book that probably springs to mind is ‘Daughter of Smoke and Bone’, which is a great book (I have only read the first one), but the Laini Taylor books that really stand out to me are her children’s faerie series, ‘Faeries of Dreamdark’. Both ‘Blackbringer’ and ‘Silksinger’ are beautiful books, the only issue being that the series wasn’t meant to end at two, Taylor just never wrote the next books, and so the story is still open… I live in hope that she will return to them one day…

A BOOK THAT MAKES YOU DREAM OF FAR OFF PLACES

I borrowed Paulo Coelho’s ‘The Alchemist’ from the library a couple of months back, and while my thoughts on the story changed throughout, one thing it kept me doing all the way through was dreaming of journeying across the Sahara.

YOUR FAVOURITE CLASSIC

This one depends on what you class as a classic, to be honest. I class a lot of books as classics that other people wouldn’t. If we are being traditional, however, I would probably choose ‘Much Ado About Nothing’ by William Shakespeare. I completely fell in love with this play last year, and I am yet to find another Shakespeare, or another play, that I like more.
