As I have previously mentioned, I am taking part in the CramAThon 2014, a readathon where the purpose is to read as many short books as possible and to meet the challenges outlined by the creator, WhittyNovels (link to her YouTube channel here). The CramAThon started on Saturday, and ends on Wednesday at 11.59PM. Now, I am not writing a wrap-up post for each individual day of the CramAThon, instead opting to round it all up in one wrap-up after completion, however I wanted to update you on where I am at the moment, given that we are into the third day.
I had a pretty lousy Saturday on reading terms, due to having work in the morning and visiting a friend’s in the afternoon. However, I did read a novella (completing the novella challenge) and a short story. First of all, I read ‘Night of Cake and Puppets’ by Laini Taylor, a novella about Zuzanna, a fan favourite from Taylor’s ‘Daughter of Smoke and Bone’ trilogy. This is probably my favourite read of the CramAThon so far, and I gave it 5 stars. The short story was a little Christmas-themed free eBook, ‘How the In-Laws Wrecked Christmas’ by Fiona Gibson. It was a nice little story, but it was not anything terribly impressive, so I gave it 3 stars. I also started ‘The Complete Persepolis’, a bind-up of the two ‘Persepolis’ autobiographical graphic novels by Marjane Satrapi.
On Sunday, I completed ‘Persepolis’. I thought that it was hard-hitting and compelling, and I gave it 4.25 stars (rounded to 4). This book also completed the graphic novel challenge. I then read ‘The Tales of Beedle the Bard’ by J.K. Rowling. This was not on my TBR for the readathon, but I was still at my friend’s house, she had a copy, and it is the only one of the three ‘Harry Potter’ ‘library books’ that I have not read. I loved this (of course) and gave it 5 stars. This also completed the challenge of reading a children’s book. I spent most of my evening reading ‘Casino Royale’ by Ian Fleming, the first ‘James Bond’ novel. I was determined to finish it on Sunday, but I got sidetracked by TV, so instead ran out of time, finishing the book at half past midnight in the early hours of this morning (Monday). However, as I read this less than 24 hours after I started reading ‘The Tales of Beedle the Bard’, I did complete the challenge of reading two books in 24 hours with these two (I did not count the two short stories/novellas read in quick succession for this challenge). I gave ‘Casino Royale’ 3 stars as while I did kind of enjoy it, there were certain prominent aspects which I had quite a few issues with, and that I will mention in my wrap-up.
So far today (it is 2:20PM on Monday) I have completed the verse/poetry challenge by reading ‘Beowulf’, the Old English epic poem. I did very much enjoy this, as I was reading it merely for pleasure, rather than analytically as I would have done had I read it without the time constraint. I gave this 4 stars. As I read this book, I have decided not to read the Tennyson poetry I listed on my TBR, as it would fill the same role as this has done.
I have three more books from my TBR to complete, ‘War Horse’ by Michael Morpurgo (intended to be my children’s book, although ‘The Tales of Beedle the Bard’ fulfilled the same purpose), ‘Dear Lupin’ by Roger and Charlie Mortimer (my hardcover challenge book) and ‘Sex and the City’ by Candace Bushnell. I have not started any of them, so i think that my next read will be ‘Dear Lupin’, in order to complete the hardcover challenge. This would leave all individual challenges complete. The final challenge was to read 5 books in total. I am not counting the novellas in this count, only including books which I read in physical form. With ‘Persepolis’, ‘The Tales of Beedle the Bard’, ‘Beowulf’ and ‘Casino Royale’ complete already, I only have to read one more to reach this target, however I am hoping to complete all three of the stated books.
That sums up where I stand with my CramAThon books. Better go and read!
