TBRs and Hauls

2015 Reading Goals

It is nearly Christmas, and if it is nearly Christmas, then it is nearly New Year… 2015 will soon be upon us. It was in May of this year that I got back into reading properly, and since then I have had a very successful reading year. I set my Goodreads reading challenge at 40 books when I started on the site in June, and I have in fact read 140 books, poems and short stories, exceeding that target immensely (a testament to how much time I had on my hands and how little work I actually do… sorry to my Sixth Form…). I have decided to plan out some tasks for myself for 2015, so that I have a sense of accomplishment (or failure) this time next year.

The Goodreads Reading Challenge

As my challenge of 40 was way underestimated this year, I am going to aim for 120 next year; this equates to 10 books a month, which sounds quite doable for me. I am a little tentative about it, however, as my workload from last year to this year has increased substantially, and if I am going to need to study and work more, I do not want to get behind on my reading.

The ‘Finish That Series’ Challenge

I have already done a post about one challenge which I hope to complete next year: the ‘Finish That Series’ challenge. I am not going to explain it again, so I will put a link to my post here, but in essence, I want to aim to finish/get up-to-date with at least 7 (preferably 12+) series which I have not finished previously, completing either the gold or platinum badge for this challenge. Suggestions for some series I want to finish next year can be found within the post.

The 105 Challenge

In an attempt to diversify my reading, I am going to take part in the 105 challenge, of which the purpose is to read 1 book of 1 category, 2 books of another and so forth until 12, therefore adding up to 105 books read. I have made a post with my 12 categories, which I will link here. Books cannot count towards more than one category, or the total will not be 105!

Monthly Challenges

I do not often compare the amount of reading I do from month-to-month, as the amount of work I have is so irregular, however I am going to set myself a target to finish at least 5 proper books (no short stories or poems etc.) within the course of each month. I would also like to read at least one book a month which has been on my TBR pile for a while (since before 2015 begins at least) so that I can get rid of some of those books which will otherwise languish on the shelf for ages; basically, I cannot just read brand new books all of the time, or my TBR will never shrink.

Individual Books Which I Want to Read

There are many books which I always say that I will read and never do. I am going to draw up a list of 20 books that I want to get read next year without fail:

  1. ‘Salmon Fishing in the Yemen’ by Paul Torday
  2. ‘Sea of Shadows’ by Kelley Armstrong
  3. ‘Solitaire’ by Alice Oseman
  4. ‘A Tiny Bit Marvellous’ by Dawn French
  5. ‘The Casual Vacancy’ by J.K. Rowling
  6. ‘The Hound of the Baskervilles’ by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle
  7. ‘The Sword of Shannara’ by Terry Brooks
  8. ‘The Three Musketeers’ by Alexandre Dumas
  9. ‘The Top Gear Years’ by Jeremy Clarkson
  10. ‘Sweetly’ by Jackson Pearce
  11. ‘Uglies’ by Scott Westerfeld
  12. ‘My Sister’s Keeper’ by Jodi Picoult
  13. ‘The Time Traveler’s Wife’ by Audrey Niffenegger
  14. ‘The Inside Track’ by Jake Humphrey
  15. ‘Angels and Demons’ by Dan Brown
  16. ‘Gone’ by Michael Grant
  17. ‘Paper Swans’ by Jessica Thompson
  18. ‘Northern Lights’ by Philip Pullman
  19. ‘Philomena’ by Martin Sixsmith
  20. ‘Channel Blue’ by Jay Martel

Another goal which I have set myself is to reread the entirety of ‘The Lord of the Rings’, as I am very much in a Tolkien mood, and it has been years since I read this trilogy. I also would like to read ‘The Silmarillion’ for the first time, and possibly reread ‘The Hobbit’, but as I last read this in September, that is not as pressing an issue.

This just about summarises all of the targets I will set myself for the next year. I will also be making up some rules as I go along, and I have some general targets, such as wanting to take part in more readathons, but this list comprises the most important goals I have for 2015.
